Carrots

Lured from his safe rabbit hole by the scent of a carrot, Bugs Bunny looked at the carrot and mused, "There I go, betrayed by my baser instincts again. I don't know what it is about carrots. There's not much meat on them. They're kinda dry too. But I love them!" Like the rascally rabbit at times we also are betrayed by what could be described as our baser instincts. These impulses, urges, and even addictions are a source of revenue for many legitimate businesses and are the basis of much of our advertising.

There are other types of carrots that betray us as well, such as possessiveness that leads to a sense of entitlement. Extreme examples of this can be found in some relationships masquerading as love. Another is an addiction to negativity or complaining. Most of us know at least one person who communicates with righteous anger or resentment toward people and/or situations on a regular basis. Interacting with those who have these types of carrots can leave some of us feeling drained while others may be lured in to participation. Whatever the form of our self betrayal we may be unaware of the impact it has not only on us but also on others, even those whom we care about the most. All of us have carrots, some benign and others more malignant. They spring from our attitudes about ourselves and who we believe that we are.

The difference between many of us and Bugs Bunny is that he understood that he was betrayed by his own instincts and didn't try to blame his behavior on someone else. Even if Elmer Fudd did plant the carrot to lure him, Bugs knew he was responsible for what he did about it.

Anticipate a Great Day. It's yours!
